古代から中世にかけ、本宮・新宮・那智の熊野三山の信仰が高まり、上皇・女院から庶民にいたるまで、多くの人々が熊野を参詣しました。
「蟻の熊野詣」と例えられるほど、多くの人々が切れ目なく熊野に参詣したと伝えられています。
田辺から熊野本宮に向かう中辺路（なかへち）、田辺から海岸線沿いに那智・新宮へ向かう大辺路（おおへち）、高野山から熊野本宮へ向かう小辺路（こへち）が、「熊野参詣道」として世界遺産に登録されています。
最も多くの参詣者が歩いたとされる熊野参詣道・中辺路。その難行苦行の道のりを終え、最初にたどり着くのが熊野本宮大社。最初に熊野本宮大社を望む「伏拝王子」の名は、やっとたどり着いた熊野本宮大社を伏して拝んだ、との由来からと伝えられています。
本宮町内には、熊野本宮大社、熊野本宮大社旧社地 大斎原、熊野本宮大社の神域の入口とされる「発心門王子」などがあり、初心者でも手軽に歩ける熊野古道ウォークコースがあります。
近年は「パワースポット」としても注目される熊野を、みなさんも歩いてみませんか？
● Kumano Kodo
From ancient days to the medieval times, the rise of Kumano Sanzan worship (three Grand Shrines of Hogu, Shingu, Nachi) started. From retired Emperors, ladies and gentlemen of the noble class to common folks, all came to this Kumano. This popularity was often described as “Ants’ Kumano Pilgrimage” as so many people were constantly coming and walking on the Kumano Kodo.
Kumano Kodo has a couple of routes - the main Nakahechi Route that is between Tanabe and Hongu, Ohechi Route, a coastal route starting from Tanabe to Nachi and Shingu, Kohechi Route that connects between Koyasan, a temple town, to Kumano Hongu, and Iseji Route in Mie Prefecture – those routes are designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Because the 300-km long and tough walk from Kyoto through Kumano Kodo was so hard, when pilgrims finally spot the sight of the Gate of the first destination Kumano Hongu Grand Shrine, they became so overwhelmed that pilgrims bow down on the ground for deep appreciation and prayer. This lookout point is called Fushiogami – it literally means “bow down and pray”.
In Hongu Town, there are this Grand Shrine, old site of this Shrine, Oyunohara (a tall gate standing at the entrance of this old site), and Hosshinmon where beyond this gate it is said to be the sacred area of Kumano Hongu Grand Shrine and a pleasant walk path, suited for beginners, leading to Kumano Hongu Grand Shrine.
